Tarkovsky has a theory of "lived time" that informs all his movies. basically, he tries to use as few shots as possible so that the movie unfolds in almost real time so that you feel as though you are actually experiencing his films.
this is also the reason for actors looking directly into the camera when delivering lines. almost creating a dialog explicitly with the viewer.
