Review of Nostalgia (1983) by Private U — 25 Mar 2008
First off, let me say this is an incredibly trying film. I wouldn't blame someone if they didn't like it. That said, the film raises some fascinating points and I continue to look more favorably on the film the longer after I've viewed it.
Specifically, the idea of the modern world being corrupt and dangerous to mankind is best exemplified by Domenico. The cinematography is some of the best I've ever seen and Tarkovsky's long takes can be rough, but the way the man constructs a frame is just astounding.
There are also some neat camera tricks employed, such as zooming in on an apparent diorama but then have it become a landscape or have fog/darkness envelope people as memories become more apparent.
