Review of Nostalgia (1983) by Andrew B — 05 Jan 2011
After the first viewing I felt I had just scratched the surface of the film. Again, the images are rich and beautiful. Nature, water and fire. The very surface of the walls. Their grey colors. Dark light permeats the picture, figures in rooms, against windows and hallways.
A white horse on a field. Memories. Memories of Russia. In Zerkalo, three layers of time existed simultaneously. Here, Russia and Italy exist simultaneously side by side in the last majestic image. And it's snowing.
At one point a character says: "You can't translate poetry." This is visual poetry.
