Review of Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) by David H — 23 Jul 2010
The best horror film ever made. Herzog is quite possibly cinema's most eccentric and ambitious voice. For me, he's only faltered once, and that's impressive, to say the least. Nosferatu elevates the horror genre, one of the only times I can truly make such a statement (Jacob's Ladder, so far, being the other one).
It's a film of archetypal horror, but also one of the only times where the audience truly sympathizes (in a most unsettling way) with the monster. From the very first frame, Herzog establishes a dream-like atmosphere wherein nature's terrifying and uncanny power is brought to the fore via the director's unsurpassed visual eye.
You FEEL the forces of evil and loss pass through the screen and enter your heart. As a film, it's deeply unsettling and poetically beautiful in the same, glorious instances. A masterpiece. (Makes The Shining look like The Grudge.
