Review of Norwegian Wood (2010) by Fred L — 14 Sep 2010
Anh Hung Tran had a daunting task in making a fim adaptation of the beloved novel "Norwegian Wood" (written by the revered Japanese writer Haruki Murakami). Tran( who was born in Vietnam and lives in France)is the director of the critically acclaimed film "The Scent of Green Papaya".
Tran, a great fan of Murakami's novels in French told me at the Toronto International Film Festival of his long process. He originally wrote a very long script in French. The script was then translated to English and submitted to Murakami.
Murakami returned the script with detailed notes and additional notes about the story not included in the novel, with the go ahead to make the film. Tran worked with an all Japanese cast on location in Japan.
