Review of Norwegian Wood (2010) by Yudi J — 06 Jun 2011
Hmm, sorry for the long review (not professionaly written I guess, I think I need to shorten some of my review and change it from technical review to an overall feel about current movie...).
This movie is so-so... and I haven't read the novel, so this is the review based on the film itself, not compared with the novel...
Some of the part is really annoying... what really bother me is the narrator, there are 2 kind of narrator (based on films I watched, not a movie theory book -_-) the one that already know what will happen or already know all the thins, the second one is the mind of the character as the story/film is going on... and you can't mixed them up, you cannot suddenly tell a future when the audiences felt like you're telling what is on your mind right now...
Bad editing of this movie tell audiences that a lot of years have passed, when it is only 7 months (wtf).
Some of the scenes are really unnessecary, they didn't tell anything or help to build a character or story, it just there without any meanings... I suppose the scenes were to show the main character's emotion, but it surely failed to do so.
The slow pace of this movie works to build the correct mood, but it kinda give away what will happened at the end -_-".
What I praised from this movie is the sets and the fashion, especially from the beginning of the movie. I know that I don't know what exactly the japanese 60s or 70s style looks like, but the set and dress the character wore really "retro". even the people itself looks totally like that. hahaha... beside the town set, the nature set is beuatiful too...
The acting. rinko kikuchi is terrific, the other female character is good too. the lack is probably the main character, I don't understand him...
For this kind of story (complex relationship betwen man and woman), the name wong kar wai keep popping on my head when watching this, ahahahahaa....
