Review of Northanger Abbey (2007) by Janice : — 18 Jun 2010
I may be alone on this one, but Northanger Abbey is my favorite Jane Austen novel. Thus, my expectations for this adaptation were incredibly high. To my surprise, it surpassed them. This film is pure brilliance.
Felicity Jones is absolutely perfect as the Gothic Novel-obsessed and perfectly naive Catherine Morland. JJ Feild as Mr. Tilney (my favorite Austen hero) is incredibly charming and flirty. Feild was cast exceptionally well.
He IS Mr. Tilney. This is quite a faithful adaptation, which is quite rare in novel adaptations. The costumes are just gorgeous, which makes me completely jealous of that whole era and how beautiful it seems.
The kiss (which Catherine and Henry share) at the end of the film is one of the best I have seen in any movie, ever. It is beautifully shot and the chemistry between the two actors is evident. Only in Britain do we see the true underlying heat and passion of a kiss without actually involving sex.
