Review of North to Alaska (1960) by Jeff Z — 21 Apr 2010
After the genius that is "The Quiet Man" it seems the Wayne team decided to try and but big, boisterous fights in a number of his films and that would be great. Great and perfectly done in character in "The Quiet Man", hamhanded, sloppy and annoying in this, a formula they repeated for "McClintock".
Wayne and Capucine actually have some very good scenes together as he tries to bring her back to Alaska for his partner but along the way falls in love with her. But the film is hurt by its poorly done broad comedy (though I did like Wayne's "jealous" scene).
Kovacs is miscast and wasted as the bad guy and Fabian's idea of acting is to stare wide eyed all the time. It's almost enough to make you long for Patrick Wayne to replace him. Almost.
