Review of North Sea Texas (2011) by Alan W — 11 Apr 2012
Understated drama pitched as a coming-of-age Brokeback Mountain with subtitles. Beautifully and nostalgically composed. A simple love story simply told. But either something is lost in translation or some things are just not spelt out or explained explicitly - and Im not saying that it is crucial, but it just leaves me scratching my head a bit at times.
Had the performances (from the young leads to the Matt Lucas-in-drag mom) not been as charming, it would have rated lower; and under different hands, this also has the potential to be irritating or pretentious.
Fortunately for the film, the cast is all on fine form and Defurne is a name to watch out for in the future.
