Review of North Face (2008) by Jason J — 26 Jan 2010
Superb German movie charting the real life ill fated ascent of the imposing Eiger north face in July 1936 which ended in tragedy. Two German mountaineers (Kurz and Hinterstoisser) who were later joined by 2 Austrians (Rainer and Angerer) run into some trouble after a rockfall and one of them is injured.
Rather than leaving the 2 Austrians to get back down on their own, Kurz and Hinterstoisser cancel their ascent and attempt to help them out but one disaster leads to another. This is such a captivating mountaineering movie and the climbing scenes are nothing short of sensational.
The cinematography around the Eiger is breathtaking. The filmmakers take care in capturing the feel of how climbers scaled mountains back in the 1930's. The story is gripping, riveting and thrilling.
Definitely one of the greatest if not the best mountaineering movie you'll ever see.
