Review of North Country (2005) by Alvin Y — 09 Feb 2011
North Country is an important film because it reminds us of how far we as a society can come in a short time. While I am aware that women and men still suffer from sexual harassment in their places of work, the treatment documented in the film is completely foreign to me, and I have brave women like those portrayed in North Country to thank for that.
Charlize Theron deserves to have an Oscar nomination for her stellar work in this film, and it would be a grave miscarriage not to award the Best Supporting role to Frances McDormand. She really was that good.
North Country is solidly scripted, the sets and lighting capture the times, the culture and the mood very well, and the acting is superb from all cast members.
