Review of North by Northwest (1959) by Matthew H — 23 Aug 2015
This charming proto-Bond thriller may just be Hitchcock's greatest (stiff competition being Psycho and Notorious). It is aggressively flirty, infinitely watchable, and a perfect balance of wit and action.
Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint are in top form here, and Hitchcock pushes the boundaries of both sensuality and storytelling. It is littered with iconic set pieces and grandiose plot twists. Does this movie make any sense? Not really, and it doesn't have to.
That's how well it is assembled. It would be hard to have more fun in a movie.
