Review of North by Northwest (1959) by Ron S — 25 Mar 2011
I don't know if I've ever seen a movie from the 50s with a budget like this and it definitely makes it awesome. The action scenes are some of the best I've ever seen in the 50s or ever and they all have such a great, slow build up.
The movie looks gorgeous too, with great shots of New York and Mt. Rushmore. The acting is also pretty good, but I have a small issue with Cary Grant in this role. The main character is an everyman who gets caught up in this big, crazy mystery and I don't think Grant is best suited for that role.
He plays it too much like a dapper, British gentleman, he is constantly spewing off one liners which are usually pretty funny, but he never smiles. He seems too serious and high class to be in this role.
It seems like a textbook Jimmy Stewart role, but he musta been busy.
