Review of North by Northwest (1959) by Steve W — 19 Oct 2011
A classy thriller that would lead the wrong place, wrong time genre. Advertising executive Roger Thornhill is mistaken for George Kaplan, and is thrust into a dangerous adventure full of intrigue and danger.
The movie works with its twists and turns, and some breath-taking action scenes. Besides the climax on Mt. Rushmore, the scene with the crop duster is one of the highlights of the film. Also memorable is the auction house.
A simple sense of humour also keep things from getting too serious. Cary Grant is able to deliver some nice zingers or sarcasm, probably from all those screwball comedies he's done. Also, Eva Marie Saint is as seductive as ever.
Featuring a great cast, (must commend James Mason), high thrills, and a memorable Bernard Hermann score, North By Northwest is an essential viewing film for anyone interested in classic cinema.
