Review of Norbit (2007) by Kayla W — 02 Jan 2012
Norbit was a pathetic waste of talent from Murphy and it depresses me that this is what people pass for comedy. Eddie Murphy used to be one of the funniest comedians of all time, what happened? I wish we could return to those days but sadly its too late for that, unless he can do a great return into the films he used to do.
The story follows Norbit (Eddie Murphy) as his life is terrorized by his obese wife Rasputia (Eddie Murphy). But when his childhood romatic interest (Thandie Newton) returns he tries to win her heart, but that is troubling when his wife will destroy anyone to keep her man.
The plot of the movie is as pointless and stupid as stories can get. We all know how this film is going to end, we have seen movies like this over and over and they just get by on cheap laughs about fat jokes. Mrs. Doubtfire was hilarious because it was about a man who dressed up in a fat suit, but this kind of movie where the man in the suit is actually supposed to be a woman, and that is just the worst kind of movie. I simply hated each character as well, nobody was likable, Norbit was quirky and awckward, Rasputia is disgusting, Mr. Wong was just simply annoying, and Kate was just their as the romantic interest and nothing else. I hated the plot and I am mad that some people actually believed that it was good.
The cast consists of Eddie Murphy, Eddie Murphy, Eddie Murphy, and then a few other actors who nobody cares about. Eddie Murphy must have been having a lot of fun acting in this, but the feeling is not mutual for me, I thought each role he did was just annoying. It was like he was bound a determined to make a failure of a film if you ask me. Espically since he not only acted these characters, he wrote the story and created them. The rest of the cast was boring and did this for the pay check.
Norbit had some good make up, and that is the only positive thing I can say about the film. Only time I even chuckled was a scene with Rasputia at a waterpark on a waterslide, but that was only because as much as a horrible film this was, I know Eddie Murphy still has some good comedy left in him and that scene was not that bad. Other than that this was a pathetic and crappy film that is a shame to true comedy films everywhere. If you wish to see Norbit, you better prepare to feel like an idiot, because I felt that for an entire week after seeing this movie.
