Review of Nope (2022) by Weirdfishes378 — 22 Jul 2022
One of the best films of the year so far.
I don’t want to delve too deep into this one early because I think to do so gives up some of the fun and I stand in solidarity with UK brothers. If Top Gun: Maverick reminded me of the kind of sincere blockbuster filmmaking of the 1980s than Nope feels like the kind of Spielberg spectacle of the 90s. It’s maybe Peele’s least metaphorical but still every bit as pointed as his previous work. It’s easily the most visually astounding film of the year and a massive step-up for Peele as a filmmaker. Peele’s imagination mixed with Hoyte Van Hoytema’s eye, my god, sublime.
