Review of Nocturnal Animals (2016) by Kevin P — 22 Dec 2016
"Nocturnal Animals" is a truly fascinating character piece that examines the brutality of humanity and romance in a sharp and visceral way. Grounded by strong performances top to bottom, the film is immediately engrossing and introspective.
While sharing very little screen time, Adams and Gyllenhaal effectively get the most out of each other's performances while providing the film most of its profound depth. Tom Ford's incredible writing and directing showcase his ability as a true filmmaker.
He deftly develops a bleak and grim reality that many often experience. Set against the backdrop of a crime drama, the film achieves a slow-burning subtlety of anxiety and tension that is felt across both of the film's narratives.
This allows Ford the opportunity to weave themes of helplessness and revenge throughout the film in a satisfying fashion. Some of the film's meaning may be lost among its ambiguity but deep beneath it all lies a masterpiece.
The film will leave you with a truly affecting experience, much like the characters.
