Review of Nocturnal Animals (2016) by Frankrog29 — 05 Apr 2017
Nocturnal Animals is the best movie of 2016 that I have seen so far. The unfolding of the plot allows for maximum tension and suspense. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Michael Shannon, and Jake Gyllenhaal are tremendous.
Tom Ford did an excellent job writing the adapted screenplay; this movie proves that he is without a doubt a director to watch. I will give one caveat: this movie is a disturbing, unsettling work of art and not for the squeamish.
AMPAS basically snubbed Nocturnal Animals and Elle, which makes me think that they shy away from movies that are bombastic or overtly sexual. AMPAS likes sentimental, melodramatic movies that beat you over the head with a moral message.
However, moral dilemmas are rarely so easily resolved in real life. Kudos to the Golden Globes, which gave acting awards to Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Isabelle Huppert and the Best Foreign Language Film award to Elle.
