Review of Nocturnal Animals (2016) by Lou A — 12 Dec 2016
-As expected from a Tom Ford film, beautiful cinematography and production value. Elegant cuts/staging between fictional and non-fictional scenes. Strong performances from Adams, Shannon & Gyllenhaal. Roadside kidnapping scene was tense.
-Weak emotional connection between Amy & Jake's characters so book's impact on her felt insufficient...compounded by her overreactions to sections of the book. Cliched filled story. Amy/Armie relationship and world so vapid taking "who cares about the problems of rich people" to another level. Aaron Taylor-Johnson's performance was so over the top putting another nail in the coffin of the redneck villain stereotype. Time lapse of Amy waiting for Jake at restaurant was hackneyed and left no emotional impact.
-Highlight cast, Tom's past accolades for Single Man, and hope reviews compliment performances, film, etc although middling reviews make that tough. Oversold the thriller aspect which may have caused audience backlash and can't imagine WOM is good.
