Review of Nocturnal Animals (2016) by Mitch C — 26 Feb 2017
This isn't a film for everyone as the opening credits might off put most to not even see what else it has in store... but this cerebral thriller is one of the most finely tuned screenplays with a preconception of how to edit & weave it's multiple storylines into a clever thriller.
Everyone does exceedingly well in this film however Jake, while being a strong performer, doesn't play anything I haven't seen before... so it felt hard to latch onto him. Seeing Amy Adams fulfill Tom Ford's cold & sleek version of her character is beyond rewarding and begs to wonder if Amy would finally receive an oscar win if she ever played a villain.
To which Aaron Taylor Johnson whole-heartedly deserved his Golden Globes win and I would consider a major snub by the Oscars. Along with Tom Ford's script. His "on the nose" directorial choices (which is less than a handful of times) cost him a director's nomination.
.. but Tom Ford is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to creating truly great cinema.
