Review of Nocturnal Animals (2016) by Christopher B — 15 Apr 2017
Nocturnal Animals is a dark, nasty and brilliantly written film. The film has superb lead acting from Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal. However the show stealers are Aaron Taylor Johnson and Michael Shannon, both of whom give excellent and layered performances, Taylor Johnson in particular gives the performance of his career.
The film is very well directed by Tom Ford who is able to brilliantly craft a dark and twisted film about revenge and love. The writing is excellent as the film fantastically weaves together three stories.
The film however is problematic with some slightly shaky editing and the Amy Adams storyline can at times simply consist of her reading a book and being shocked which gets a bit repetitive. However technically the film is excellent with superb cinematography.
The film is far from perfect but it is very good and has an excellent ending. A-.
