Review of Nobody Knows (2004) by Siena S — 07 Jul 2005
This is simultaneously one of the most depressing and uplifting movies I've ever seen. I don't mean to sound sappy, but it offers a heartbreaking testament to the ability of humanity to triumph over adversity.
Nobody Knows is based on the true story of a Japanese woman who abandons her four children in an apartment while she begins a new life in a new town with a new husband. The children, ranging in age from 12 to 3 (?) are forced to fend for themselves. My stomach leaps to my throat everytime I remember that this movie is based on a true story and that it is only one accounting of many true stories. Ugh!!!
Kevin and I left the movie and wanted to kill ourselves. I think we went home and drank. He did say, for a few weeks after seeing the movie, that he wanted to have kids. I think the movie made him realize how resiliant children are and how, as bad a father he thinks he may be, lots of people are worse.
I recommended this movie to so many people because I feel it's one of those movies that exposes Lars Von Trier as a fake. Toying with our emotions and such...
Go see this movie!!!!!
