Review of Nobody Knows (2004) by Sean S — 13 Jan 2008
An incredibly special film. Kore-Eda gets amazing performances from the children onscreen, and manages to tell a heartbreaking story without moralizing or indulging in maudlin sentiment. It's impossible to imagine what Hollywood might do with the same material.
Call it the cinema of abjection. For no particular reason (except for the theme of children in trouble), I'm compelled to group this with Lukas Moodysson's "A Hole in My Heart.".
