Review of Nobody Knows (2004) by Jennifer K — 01 Feb 2008
One mother, two brothers, two sisters. Mother is about as evolved as a cockroach. Maybe that's slightly offensive to the cockroach. A woman about as maternal as Cruella DeVille, she deserts her children for months at a time, leaving them a paltry amount of money without any return date in mind. The eldest brother watches out for the younger ones. They are all traumatized by the loss of their mother and the lack of any father figures.
To complicate matters, when the family moved in, the landlord was only aware of the older son, so the rest of the siblings must remain indoors at all times for fear of discovery. Months and months pass, and depression sets in. As children will, they create happiness wherever they can and their little, resilient souls keep on hoping.
The saddest part is witnessing the irrevocable damage to their psyches on screen. The movie ends without closure. The viewer is left wondering if anyone will ever discover them, having descended into begging, no electricity, running water, gas or suitable clothing.
We are reimnded of the all too numerous gaps that exist in this world and the multitude of souls who are languishing right now.
