Review of Noah (2013) by Scott E — 11 Dec 2014
I was interested to see Aronofsky's take on Noah. I found the story, direction and acting to be superb. The bleak landscapes gave the film a real apocalyptic feel to it. Russell Crowe stars as Noah, and he is a conflicted man but a loyal servant to the Creator.
His motivations are believable as the plot has a good set up for who he is. He is a good man in a bad world. Jennifer Connelly is wonderful as his loving wife, Naameh. The supporting cast is excellent.
There is a fantasy element to this, and some violence. But it is the truly human drama that is well realized here. Emma Watson gives a moving performance. Overall this is not a film that will please everyone.
Overall Noah himself wasn't a smart man, he was a flawed man, but he does indeed represent man well. I think Aronofsky did a fine job and he should be proud of this product. It was memorable, it took on a biblical legend and gave it life, and it is preachy enough to insist on enough humility as to not insist upon itself.
But overall it is so serious and sad, there is not a moment of levity nor humor, it still manages to float and not sink.
