Review of No Retreat, No Surrender (1986) by Warren A — 12 Jun 2008
AWESOME. I'd not seen this for about 20 years, but recent listens to Bruce Springsteen's song "No Surrender", made me want to dig it out. It hasn't dated well. Pretty appalling acting, the sound is poor, the story cliched, recalling Karate Kid and Rocky 4 especially.
BUT, it's hugely entertaining, and laugh-ot-loud funny. Not content with simply beating his opponents, Van Damme's character tangles them up in the ropes, and ties chains around their necks. That's not forgetting the thing people most remember about this film - the ghost of Bruce Lee guiding the student to greatness.
Classic.
