Review of No Holds Barred (1952) by Jess B — 01 Jun 2010
This was Hulk's big debut, his first starring role in a major motion picture.
So howd it go..was it glorious or a stain on the Hulksters career?
Well...
Welcome to middle class america , Jeff Foxworthy eat your heart out, this is about as blue collar awesome as awesome can get. A bunch a over sized sweat hogs get all greased up and slap each others belly's in one of the dirtiest places on the planet. Yes Sir every trucker and pig farmer from here to tinbucktoo has thrown their hat in for the "toughest man in the world" tournament.
Needless to say, this movie glorifies muscle and mayhem. Which truely isn't off key for a film starring Hulk. So at least they got the right concept.
Hogan was the ultimate hype man of the 80's bigger and louder than anyone else, no doubt Hogan belonged in front of the camera, but this movie gave him a chance to show versatility. Perhaps Hulk could do comedy or even romance, when the script called for it....not quite.
It came off as campy and cheap but, still there was no denying Hogan's appeal to his audience. In essence the movie is just what you'd expect.
Despite all the absurdity, the movie gave wrestling fans something to enjoy, the confrontation between Zues and Hulk was memorable, and the fight at the end...satisfying.
Although it didnt make much at the box office, it managed to put an even bigger spotlight on Hulk, and introduce the fans to Tom Lister Jr. and the Zues character. short lived yes, but memorable none the less.
Lets face it not everyone in the world likes wrestling but for those that do ( including me), Im glad this movie was made during the golden era of the WWF.
