Review of No Hard Feelings (2023) by Jluis_001 — 24 Jun 2023
Having an Academy Award-winning actress star in a raunchy comedy might sound like something more relevant than it really is, and yet it's not. It's not because No Hard Feelings wastes no time in demonstrating that it's a weaker, and more prudish, story than it pretends to sell.
Problematically, Lawrence's comedic gifts fall back on using her sensuality to open up absurd situations and behaviors.
It's not exactly funny, but the idea is clearly geared towards the more cynical elements of her character's attitude and what she'll be able to physically do with it. It's not necessarily ineffective, but I don't see anything groundbreaking either, you know?
Maybe that's also why it's contradictory to see that the film was rated R when there's very little that could be considered truly deserving of that rating.
You saw the best gags in the trailers and that says a lot about its humorous weaknesses.
It's a shame, because it's clear that the mix of the main characters could have benefited from other funny experiences, especially considering that the male lead's personality is far from looking to jump into bed with Lawrence in a heartbeat, even though it could be argued that any male character would be looking to do so.
With it there were better situations to take advantage of, but it becomes apparent that the screenwriters didn't think of that.
Arguably this could have been a huge disaster, but its actors believed enough in the script, which was desperately looking for the talent to come through.
I won't tell you not to see it, but I'll put it this way: I'm glad I was invited and didn't pay my ticket to see it.
