Review of No Escape (2015) by Gwen L — 13 Dec 2015
While this movie may seem conventional with i's very recognizable cast and somehwat predictable storyline, that is entirely what bring it close to home. While the movie itself takes place in a foreign country and with politics many of us are only passingly familiar, it endears us to the characters by utilizing familiar and typically comedic actors in well established roles.
We hardly know anything about this family, other than they love each other and only want to survive, that frees it up for us to be able to imagine our own friends and family and ourselves, which is terrifying and refreshing.
These aren't overly romanticized weirdos on the screen, with oddly unrealistic and unachievable ideals on what a family is, they represent mom and dad, brother and sister and most importantly they shed a harsh light on the current idea of what a refugee is.
With maniacs so removed from what life is for most people declaring that refugees are monsters or terrorists, this movie presents the reality and the truth so that people can see that refugees are not criminals, they are victims of a circumstance beyond their control.
Unfortunately this movie is currently underrated, but if you see one movie this year, don't make it another vain attempt to recapture the wild success of a series that died in the 90's, make it a good movie with a real message.
