Review of No (2012) by Carlos M — 11 Feb 2013
A fascinating and dramatic account of the Pinochet plebiscite - educating and informing as well as entertaining at the same time (reminiscent more of Argo than Lincoln). The director's deliberately lo-fi approach and framing not only blends real footage seamlessly with reenactments but also smartly invoke the late 80s time frame this piece of history was set in.
The film is often funny and light at times but with an underlying menace that acts as a constant reminder of how tense and life-threatening their situations really were. A nicely balanced film and worthy of its Oscar nom.
