Review of No (2012) by Evan E — 23 Apr 2013
"No" is a movie that filled me with expectation as I initially read about it. It is a film about the attempt to overthrow the Chilean military dictator, Pinochet, from power by a massive television campaign.
The biggest thing that took me out of the story in this movie was the attempt to imitate the television of the time. The entire movie was filmed in a TV aspect ratio and delivered with an even grainier and indistiguishable picture than I remember as a ten-year-old in 1988. It effectively worked to keep my mind out of the movie.
The other major problem was the lack of character development and sense of drive to the film. At an almost two-hour running length, you would expect a little bit more to go on in the plot. In an attempt for authenticity, a distinct lack of action was held high as a virtue in this film. Because the story was told only from one side, the sense of drama that the filmmakers could have achieved was unfirtunately lost.
This movie is a case of trying create a feature film on the dramatic material of a short story. It doesn't work.
