Review of Nixon (1995) by Jeremy T — 23 Aug 2008
Hopkins' performance borders on a lot of things. It borders on impersonation, it borders on sounding a little too much like John Huston, and it especially borders on failure, seeing as at some points he looks uncomfortable in his own skin.
The character seems forced, but it's hard to argue that it's still a great performance. He may not have come the closest to Nixon, but he still gives an epic performance. The film is good (very long, the director's cut is 3.
5 hrs), and does an excellent job of creating sympathy for someone who is considered by many to be evil. The supporting cast shows up, but nobody really sticks out, except for maybe James Woods. Ed Harris is great but has very little screen time.
I'm curious to see how W. will turn out now.
