Oliver Stone is an interesting director. I only recently realized this, but in one respect he is the only contemporary director similar John Ford in that he mainly chronicles various aspects of America.
Stone seems to be fascinated with American history. This is one of his more monumental works that focuses on one of the more important figures in American history. I remember liking this far more the first time around though.
It's the type of script that would probably be better served as a mini-series. Nixon certainly is a fascinating individual. He also lived through and helped create some fascinating times. Hopkins give an excellent performance here, but it is not his best.
No one could have done it better, but he has managed to reach greater heights inhabiting other characters. This is above all a tragedy, which is fairly rare in cinema these days. It could easily be called The Tragedy of the Nixon.
An excellent film, but I can't say I plan on watching it again anytime soon.
