Powerful performances and good cinematography are all that save this overlong, redundant picture from caving in on itself. For three and a half hours, we are forced to watch practically the same thing over and over and over.

It gets tiring very quickly. Oliver Stone's crazy additions also make the viewer go "what?" For example: random bits in black and white in the middle of a scene. Looking beyond that, though, Anthony Hopkins, while he may not look too much like Richard Nixon, got the voice down perfectly.

His performance alone makes the film worth watching. Joan Allen does a wonderful job as Pat Nixon, and the remaining cast all do magnificent jobs. Overall, the film has as many good points as it does bad, so a middle rating of three stars seems adequate.
