Review of Nixon (1995) by Josh S — 13 Dec 2008
More so than Natural Born Killers, Nixon is the most confounding work of Stone's career, an American epic whose merit is almost impossible to ascertain. Experimental or indulgent? Lucid or ludicrous? It varies by the minute as only a Stone joint can do. To watch W. is to see a man hedge his bets; to watch Nixon is to see a man film like he may never again, and there is a grandeur to this in spite of whatever comings short or long.
Besides "fuck" and "cocksucker", the most repeated word in the movie is its title: Nixon. As Stone strives to understand Nixon, the man strives to almost undermine the very name itself until it's simply a word meaning nothing of importance. The tapes are the man. For all its intermittent wrongheadedness, it is a legitimate of fever dreams, hushed whisperings, and wished husperings.
