Review of Nixon (1995) by Blake H — 27 Dec 2010
Arguably Oliver Stone's last truly quality movie, "Nixon" manages to elicit sympathy for the controversial president due to a surprisingly good lead performance from Hopkins (who manages to capture the essence of the man even though he doesn't really look anything like him), a solid supporting cast, and an intelligent, insightful screenplay.
Only Stone's unsubtle and sometimes inappropriate directorial flourishes prevent this from quite reaching masterpiece status. (For example, it's one thing to imply that Sam Waterston's character is evil, but we don't need to see him with the demonic eyes of a horror movie villain to get the point).
