Review of Nixon (1995) by Keir B — 04 Mar 2009
Stone has had a tendency in the past to paint his characters in broad strokes and this film is no exception.
Stone does us the courtesy of acknowledging the audience's intelligence and not demonising the man, instead sketching him as the impotent patriarch, as a flawed sweaty Macbeth type with parental issues, unaware of the darker forces that influence government policy and too self obsessed to realise that he himself is doing more harm then good. Yes, classically bland sounds like the right description.
Hopkins makes a decent fist of the title role, but Stones portrait is too steeped in an archaic version of his conspiracy mythology to be credible. Its too long as well. Watch JFK instead.
