Review of Ninotchka (1939) by Nate W — 06 Aug 2009
Only in Paris could a hardboiled Bolshevik fall in love with the Western world's capitalist society, and that's exactly what happens to Greta Garbo in this delightful rom-com. Garbo and leading man Melvyn Douglas may get star billing, but the real stars are the three bumbling Russian delegates whose hilarious stoogery steals every scene.
Things get a bit too sappy about half way through, but it stays funny enough to help us swallow the barbed political commentary, coming just at the start of WWII.
