Review of Ninja Scroll (1993) by Chris S — 08 Jun 2010
So I rented the dvd Ninja Scroll because it was on LostLogic's top ten movie list and he assured me it was good. It is good. I understand that most anime fans consider it a standard favorite.
I really didn't find anything exceptional about it though. I wasn't nearly as good as people's opinions seemed to suggest to me. The animation was very good, but not special. The story was decently written but not very unique.
I sort of get the feeling that Ninja Scroll is one of the first anime films a lot teenage boys see so they feel close to it as the get older and give it more regard as a classic anime film than it deserves.
I bet that scene when that girl is grabbed her ankle and gets licked from foot to pussy really wowed those boy viewers of the movie especially when they were a little less mature and less experienced anime viewers.
I really think Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Spirited Away, and Cowboy Bebop the Movie are better anime flicks, along with a lot of others. If I'm right about the appeal of Ninja Scroll perhaps those older fans of it need to check out the Legend of the Overfiend movies - though I loathe to recommend them (It's been years since I saw one of them and they are very hard to find.
As a woman completely in touch with her sexuality and in no way a prude those movies still make me sort sick to my stomach. Sort of like when you see someone horribly mutilated in an accident - you need to look away but it's so perversely hard to.
). There are better warrior stories out there too than NS. Don't get me wrong - Ninja Scroll is a good anime movie; I was just led to believe it's one of the best and I can't agree with that.
I'd give it another 1/2 a rating point if I could.
