Review of Ninja Scroll (1993) by Ryan V — 05 May 2012
Ninja Scroll, an anime that takes place in feudal Japan, centers on a "wandering samurai" archtype named Jubei. This fellow encounters Kagero, a female ninja who has poisonous blood and is being besieged by a rock monster.
Jubei rescues Kagero and the pair form an unlikely love that is the core of the plot. While that part has narrative drive, the main appeal of this film is in the stirring animation found in the frequent and elaborate fight scenes.
Ninja Scroll doesn't transcend its genre, but it delivers as much cool looking ninja combat as the title implies.
