Review of Ninja Scroll (1993) by Brian C — 16 Jan 2013
OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! I know I sound like a 15 year old "fangurl" but this movie is just so awesome and kick-ass and amazing and great that I can't help but be one. I think long before anime became so popular with the Western audiences, this was the movie along with Akira and Ghost In The Shell that showed them that anime is not just about weird Japanese toilet humor.
This movie is not for the squeamish and definitely not one that you can watch with your parents. There's more blood and violence than most people can tolerate. All sorts of violence - physical, mental and even sexual - you name it and it's there.
You might now be tempted to dismiss the movie as a Japanese equivalent of the torture porn like Hostel. Hold your horses. Ninja Scroll has a pretty nice story too, with political turmoil, supernatural forces, forbidden love and everything in between.
But if you're up for the challenge, then DO NOT miss it.
