Review of Ninja (2009) by Fazeo F — 24 Jun 2010
Ninja (7/10) - The latest action film from DTV action master Isaac Florentine holds its own and is propelled to greater heights by its star Scott Adkins. Adkins is the real deal, a martial artist who can actually act and who has amazing skills, especially his prowess at incredible kicks.
Ninja does not have a huge Hollywood budget and you can tell most of the action scenes are done on sets trying hard to look like NYC but the action is excellent and Adkins is a marvel to watch.
If I had any complaints about the film it is the way they overused cgi blood, it just looks so fake and they use it so much that it took me out of some of the action scenes. I find the use of cgi blood lazy and it never ever looks good. If Japanese Samurai films from 40 years ago could do blood that looked semi realistic and cool there is no reason why films in 2010 should go the lazy way out and just add super fake looking cgi blood.
I also wished the film was a little more focused on the ninja mystique and the ways of the ninja. The film felt more like a modern day action film with ninjas only really playing a large role during the third section of the film. Still I was entertained and blown away by Scott Adkins martial arts skills and acting ability. This guy should be the premier action star in movies today.
