Review of Nine Queens (2000) by Aidan H — 27 Feb 2011
Like all good con artist films, Nine Queens maintains a palpable aura of distrust and inevitability which manipulates its audience with subtle twists and turns before delivering the final sucker punch.
Director Bielinsky wisely keeps most of his film on the street where the budding partnership between veteran con man Daron and sidekick-for-a-day Pauls is played out through several entertaining scenes of one-upmanship.
As each man displays his talents, the younger man's distrust of his mentor mirror own own as his amoral philosophy reveals an even blacker heart. Despite a dialogue-heavy script, NQ's is an energetic and satisfying thriller whose conclusion will have you retracing every moment of the film to see where the double and triple-crosses originate.
Gripping stuff.
