Review of Nine (2009) by Lourdes B — 22 Jun 2010
I didn't really know what to make of this when I saw it. It has an amazing cast behind it but I'd never seen the original show or the Fellini film it's based on.
Overall I thought it was 'interesting'. Of all the musicals I have seen on film over the years I found this one the most dull. This was due to a very European story (not surprising considering the source) that doesn't really go anywhere and a bunch of songs that don't really last long in the memory after viewing.
However I find this a much more visually arresting film than Marshall's 'Chicago' and Day-Lewis, Cotillard and Cruz bring a conviction to their roles that is undeserving for such material. You wish they were in a better film together basically.
As for the singing, well there's nothing to fault here. They all do rather well with Fergie probably taking most of the honours and the best song of the batch, 'Be Italian'.
Not one I'll revisit but I might try and catch 8 1/2.
