Review of Nine (2009) by Derek V — 08 Jul 2010
With such star power and great base material I had high hopes for Nine, but this film worked better in Italian when it was called 8 1/2. A renowned Italian director is preparing for a new film in which he has no script, so he hides, lies, and cheats.
The emotions of the â??maestroâ?? and the many women that surround him are played out in musical numbers in which some work better than others. Being familiar with Felliniâ??s classic made it impossible to not compare and enjoy fully.
Nine did follow the 8 1/2 somewhat and did a fairly good job blending in musical numbers, making for a more accessible story than the original. Not 8 1/2, not bad, just an interesting take with very familiar faces.
