Review of Nine (2009) by David B — 19 Jul 2010
BOOOORING!! You'd think that with such an amazing cast that they'd combust and something extraordinary would happen. Alas, twas not the case. The one good thing about Nine is that it's made me think about musicals and music in film.
I think my problem with this is that the music did not feel like it was part of the film or the story. If you think of other recent musicals like Chicago, Dancer in the Dark, Grace of My Heart - and even films about musicians which are kinda like musicals, such as Ray or Walk the Line - the music is so much a part of the story that to do the films without the music would be pointless - the film would lose its meaning.
The songs in Nine don't add anything to the story. It would be the same story without it.
