Review of Nine (2009) by Jeffrey L — 25 Jul 2010
Another hot musical to light up the end of the 2000s decade, Nine brings about a dynamite cast and mixes it with some saucy lust, catchy musical numbers and enough dance flair to last another decade. With such promising assets to this film, one may think it would be a gigantic hitâ?¦but sadly, box office numbers suggested otherwise.
What exactly is the plot here? Wellâ?¦itâ??s not extremely clear what the point of it all is, though an Italian theme is extremely prevalent. One may suggest this film exists mainly to showcase the talents of the sexy stars (the chosen females should cause just about anyone to salivate). Kate Hudson has never attracted more attention on the screen and just about everyone else is equally as good. It also is fun to see veteran actress Sofia Loren back on screen. Nicole Kidman pulls out her Moulin Rouge face and gets right back in the game and even Fergie appears to be having a wonderful time lighting up the stage (needless to say she has experience). And of course, what would a hot musical like this be without a macho male lead to fit in somewhere? Daniel Day-Lewis pulls this job off quite nicely.
Offensive material tracks this one down somewhat and may come off as demeaning to feminists. Therefore, this one is not recommended for all tastes. However, once one starts getting in the swing of things and catches on to the musical numbers and sizzling stars, what is not to be enjoyed? The costume design and cinematography also are terrific assets and disguise the period flavor so that one may not be certain when it takes placeâ?¦which adds even more mystery to it all. Coincidentally, Nine was released in â??09 the same year as the animated film, â??9â??. See it for yourself to see if you can handle the heat!
