Review of Nine (2009) by Jean S — 12 Dec 2010
It is an enormous challenge to make a film about a musical that is inspired by a prestigious classic film. "Nine" is not a bad film, but it had potential, after all it is based on Federico Fellini's "8 1/2".
Mainly, I think the problem with the film is that Rob Marshall tried to give it the same vibe that he gave to "Chicago", it work for that musical, but the "theatrical feel" to the musical numbers doesn't work here.
Also, the lyrics and songs are not very memorable, I can only think of one or two that I really liked, the rest are kind of boring (including "Cinema Italiano", there's something about that song that I almost hate).
Daniel Day-Lewis and Penelope Cruz are the best performances of the movie and their scenes always keep one's interest.
