A proper example of style over substance. Nine looks great but it's completely vacant and emotionless not helped by the fact that Daniel Day-Lewis is completely uncharismatic in the lead role of Guido, the character coming across as generally anal and unlikeable.
Despite a stellar supporting cast, none of them get much to do apart from a song or two each and Penelope Cruz in particular is just awful, writhing about in her underwear in terrible "sex-kitten" mode.
The songs themselves are tuneless and unmemorable with the decision for the musical aspect of the film to be set in the fantasy of a film-set in Guido's head, a complete disjoint with the main action.
It worked for Chicago but the same trick doesn't work here given the source material just isn't as strong. There are however some decent dance sequences with Fergie and Kate Hudson's parts being the most fun.
Rob Marshall clearly would be better directing a proper musical in a theatre than a film instead of this awkward mash-up of the two.
