Review of Nim's Island (2008) by Karin R — 17 Apr 2009
It's not quite Inkheart, but as children's movies go, this one is pretty enjoyable.
Nim is a girl who likes to read. She does not have any human friends, because she lives on an island with her scientist dad, but she does have many animal friends. Her favourite books are about Alex Rover, an Indiana Jones type hero. And then, one day, her father gets in trouble while researching at sea, and she gets an email from Alex Rover, writer of the stories...
It's an adventure film for kids. I stuggle to think of anything negative to say about it, and I struggle equally to think of anything outstandingly positive. In terms of the story, the movie feels a little like a mixture between Inkheart and Alaska. The mood is consistently more lighthearted, and the movie never tries to be gritty or sinister or scary. It's entertaining despite the lack of tension, and thus, good at what it is setting out to do.
